On Tuesday, Feb. 7, Missouri held its Primary, but only eight percent came to vote. Rick Santorum ended the day with a speech.

One of the great freedoms in America is voting, even if that vote does not count.

On Feb. 7, Missouri held its primary, but eight percent of citizens came to the polls. Some may have heard of the state’s decision to hold a primary that does not count for Republicans. It counts for Democrats, though (You can read my previous article for the full scoop on this.)

The official vote for the Republicans comes at the March 17 caucus.

Rick Santorum, former senator from Pennsylvania running for the Republican nominee, won the non-binding vote and had a rally at the St. Charles Convention Center that same night.

“I think they wasted a lot of taxpayer dollars,” said Mike Williams, a Lincoln County voter. The estimated cost is $7 million dollars.

Williams voted at Troy City Hall. This was one of 24 polling places in Lincoln County. The weather was nice and the parking lots full. About 15 people came to vote between 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., making City Hall one of the busier places in Missouri.

Lincoln County voted for Rick Santorum the most.

“I thought our state legislature messed this up by allowing this election to go on,” said a Lincoln county resident named Dale, who declined to give his last name. “They should have postponed it until it really meant something.”

Williams voted for Hermann Cain: “I didn't want (Mitt) Romney or Santorum or (Ron) Paul to think that Missouri was for them.”

That evening, Santorum gave his speech, “Conservative is alive and well in the state of Missouri and in Minnesota.” He began to cheers from 65-75 person crowd.

He then got into the heart of his message: “There is probably another person who is maybe listening here tonight also, and that might be at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,” Santorum said as he began his assault on President Barack Obama. “Why would you think he would be listening now, has he ever listened to you?” Santorum said to no’s by the crowd. “Because he thinks he knows better. He thinks he is smarter than you. He thinks he is someone who is a privileged person.”

Santorum also attacked his Republican opponents by saying that Mitt Romney has the same agenda as President Obama.

Santorum ended his day--in which he won two other states: Minnesota and Colorado-- with a honor quote: “Your honor, America’s honor is at stake.”
